Helen De Wilton Bedford was born on November 12, 1904, in Columbia, Missouri. She received her bachelor's of science degree in art and home economics from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1925. She earned her master's in art in 1931 at the Teachers College of Columbia University in New York City. She also did additional studies at the University of New Mexico in 1952.
Bedford began teaching at Southeast Missouri State University in 1925. She taught ceramics, crafts and art education, and was the head of the Art Department from 1925-1972. She was a member of and a sponsor for the scholarship committee for Kappa Pi, the national honorary art fraternity, from 1962-1970. She also was a contributor to Missouri Art Magazine.
Helen De Wilton Bedford died on March 27, 1981.
