Helen Elizabeth Beresford was born on January 5, 1900. She studied at Iowa State College and received a bachelor's of science degree. She also attended the New York School of Fine and Applied Art and the University of Iowa. She received her master’s of art degree from the University of Iowa.
Beresford was an associate professor of fine and applied art at the University of Missouri, Columbia, from 1929-1947. Following that, she was a professor and director of design at the University of Vermont, Burlington, from 1947-1954. During her tenure at both universities, she was a frequent speaker for women’s clubs and professional societies.
She also was a color and design consultant for Giddings Interiors in Colorado Springs from 1954-1956.
Beresford died on January 1, 1980.
