Verna Johnson Peck, a painter and teacher, was born on February 23, 1889, in Hutchinson, Kansas.  She studied at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, and Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. She attended the Kansas City Art Institute and earned her bachelor’s of fine arts there. She also studied under Grace Raymond, Clayton Henri Staples, and Thomas Hart Benton.

In the 1950s she moved to Independence, Missouri. She was active in the Mid-America Artists and the Community Art Association in Independence. While living in Independence, she continued to pursue her art education. Her studio was located at her home at 910 Home Avenue in Independence.

She died on February 23, 1971, in Independence.
