Gwendolyn Russell was born on April 22, 1933. She studied art at the Kansas City Art Institute, and graduated in 1954 with a bachelor’s of fine art in design.

Her paintings were shown at an exhibition of African American artists at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in 1951, 1952, and 1954. She also had a dress displayed at a student fashion show at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1953. In 1958, she participated in a program at the Paseo branch of the Y.W.C.A. entitled “A Mural of Today’s Woman,” which was presented by her and Leonard Pryor.
