Ida May Haldeman, a painter, was born on April 27, 1858, in Bloomington, Illinois. She and her family moved to Springfield, Missouri, sometime between 1880-1900. Haldeman worked in the public schools for thirty-plus years, holding several positions from being a teacher, art supervisor, to an art director. While working, Ida attended classes at Drury University in Springfield as a special student from 1900 to 1901.
Haldeman was also part of the Art Study Club led by Deborah D. Weisel. This group eventually was incorporated as the Springfield Art Museum in 1928. Haldeman’s involvement with the museum transitioned to working there as a hostess, then as a registrar helping maintain the museum’s collection.
Ida’s contributions to art through the public schools and the museum left a great impact on Springfield’s local art community. She died on July 6, 1938, in Springfield.
