Philip Conway Beam was born on October 7, 1910, in Dallas, Texas. Beam earned his doctor of philosophy degree (as well as his bachelor’s and master’s degrees) from Harvard University. He then attended the Courtauld Institute at the University of London.
Philip Beam taught interior design at the Kansas City Art Institute from 1933-1935 while working as the assistant to the director of the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery. He left Kansas City in 1936 to join the faculty at Bowdoin College in Maine, becoming the youngest director of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art in 1939. He was also a professor of art at Bowdoin and was appointed the Henry Johnson Chair of Art and Archaeology in 1958.
Philip Beam is the author of several books, including on the art of John Sloan, and contributed to other books, as well as catalogs on Winslow Homer.
He was the author of Winslow Homer at Prout’s Neck, published in 1966, upon which a television documentary, Winslow Homer of Maine, was based. He was also the author of The Language of Art (1958), The Art of John Sloan (1962), Winslow Homer in Maine (1968), Winslow Homer’s Magazine Engravings (1979), Winslow Homer’s Watercolors (1983), and the section on American art in the Visual Dictionary of Art." -- Bowdoin Magazine obituary
