Ruth Kate Felker was born on May 16, 1889, in St. Louis, Missouri. Her interest in art began when she was five years old. She attended Central High School in St. Louis, and after graduating, she began her studies at the School of Architecture at Washington University, then enrolled at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. She also studied at the Art Students League in New York and at the Society of Beaux-Arts Architects, also in New York. In 1914 she studied mural painting with Frank Brandwyn in London, England. During her studies, she taught art to students.
Felker had diverse interests, from studying vocal and piano music to writing essays. She won a prize in a costume design contest for a pageant presented in St. Louis in May 1914. She also created a mural decoration for St. John’s Hospital in St. Louis. She participated in many art exhibitions in St. Louis as well. She belonged to several artists’ organizations, including the Society of Ancients of St. Louis, the Washington University Architectural Society, the St. Louis Artists’ Guild, and the American Artists Professional League.
Ruth Kate Felker died on April 28, 1960, in Dallas, Texas.
