Gertrude Alice Kurz was born on September 2, 1893, in St. Louis, Missouri. She attended the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University. She received a formal commendation for her work when she graduated from the school in 1920. Kurz also studied art with Cordelia Baker, Edmund Prentis, Edith Diehl, Charles E. Pellew and Henry Hunt Clark.
Kurz taught at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts as an instructor in bookbinding and leather from 1920 to 1927. She also taught basketry and reedwork. She made hand-bound books for the St. Louis Town Club, the Twentieth-Century Art Club, and the New Jewish Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis.
In 1947, Kurz served on the craft jury for the St. Louis Artists’ Guild Watercolor and Craftwork exhibition. She also was a member of the Boston Society of Arts and Crafts, and was a master craftsman.
Gertrude Alice Kurz died on November 14, 1951, in St. Louis.
