Genevieve Knapp McConnell was born on March 18, 1876, in St. Louis, Missouri. She graduated from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1897, and also studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. 

McConnell was known for writing and illustrating stories for children that were published in children’s magazines. She is also the author and illustrator of the book The Seeing Eye, published in 1925.

McConnell was an active member of the Writers' Guild in St. Louis and a member of the St. Louis Artists’ Guild. She also wrote plays that she entered in contests. She won an honorable mention for her play The Grapevine in the Little Theater Tournament sponsored by the St. Louis Art League in 1930. McConnell won an award from the Writers' Guild for her radio play, The Next Builders, in 1931. McConnell was a recipient of the annual poetry prize from the St. Louis Writers’ Guild in the late 1920s.

McConnell established her own private circulating library of children’s books at the Women’s Exchange in St. Louis in 1930. Families could pay a fee to be able to borrow books.

Genevieve Knapp McConnell died on April 29, 1955, in Winter Park, Florida.
