Lillian Bohl Snider was a painter and educator who was active in Kansas and Missouri in the early twentieth century.
Snider was born and raised in Kansas City, Kansas. When she was eleven years old, she made a pencil study of a four-leaf clover design pattern that was on display at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. In 1911, she graduated from Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas, and continued her studies at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and at Kansas State Teachers College, Pittsburg, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1933.
Snider studied at the Teachers College, part of Columbia University in New York, for graduate studies in art. She also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the Frank Alvah Parsons School of Design in Paris. In addition to her formal education, Snider studied with the artists Frank Alvah Parsons when she was in New York, and with Charles Martin in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where an art colony was located. She also studied with Emil Bisttram at the Taos, New Mexico, Art School in 1936.
Snider was a teacher of art in the Kansas City, Kansas, public schools for twenty years and later became the supervisor of art. She taught art at Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas, from 1948 to 1951. While living in Missouri, Snider exhibited her work at the Kansas City Art Institute, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and with the St. Joseph Art Association. She also gave lectures about art. Her work included scenes of the Southwest.
Snider was a member of many artist associations, including the Kansas City Society of Artists, Northwest Missouri Art Association, Western Art Association, the St. Joseph Art Association, the Cooperative Artists of Kansas City, Kansas, and the Kansas State Art Association. She also was a member of the National Education Association, the American Association of University Women, and Kappa Delta Pi, an honorary scholastic fraternity for artists.
