Frederick Robert Sass was a painter who was active in Kansas City, Missouri, in the 1890s and early twentieth century. He also owned a restaurant in Kansas City and later operated a hotel in Florida.
Sass was born on July 1, 1871, in Kansas City. He graduated from the the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University in 1889, where he received an award for excellence in drawing. He then continued his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian in the late 1890s. At the Académie Julian, he studied with Benjamin Constant and Jean Paul Laurens. According to the Kansas City Star, Sass also traveled extensively throughout Europe during this time, including to art museums in Spain, Italy and France, and a trip to Africa from Gibraltar.
By 1898 Sass was back in Kansas City, where in 1908 he opened a quick-service restaurant, the Sass Open Door Restaurant, on Main Street. The meals at the restaurant were priced at five or ten cents. In 1912, Sass and his wife moved to Port Richey, Florida, where they bought and ran the Hotel Sass. Fred displayed his paintings in the lobby and dining room of his hotel.
Fred continued to be active as an artist after moving to Florida. He was a member of the Art Club of St. Petersburg and served as president from 1938 to 1939. He exhibited his work frequently in Florida, and in 1919 he had a solo exhibition held at the Florida Winter Art School. Sass was also among the organizers of the Port Richey Settlers Benefit Club and served as secretary in 1915. The club had monthly dinners at their hotel.
