George Sass was a painter active in Kansas City, Missouri, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and was known for his landscapes and history painting. He was involved with early artist organizations and exhibitions in the city.
Sass moved to Kansas City from St. Louis with his family in 1870. Sass studied art at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University, then went to Paris to study from 1886 to around 1893. In Paris, he studied at the Académie Julian with Benjamin Constant and Jean Paul Laurens.
After Sass returned to Kansas City, he became active in the local art scene. In 1897, he served as president of the Kansas City Paint Club and showed work in the exhibitions held by the club. In 1898, Sass taught art classes held on Saturday for the Art League of Leavenworth, Kansas. In the early 20th century, he was active with the Kansas City Art Club and served as its president in 1903. The club dissolved around 1904. Sass also gave public lectures as a part of the exhibitions he participated in.
Sass was a longtime teacher in the Kansas City Public Schools. He taught drawing at Westport High School from 1902 to 1914 and served as a director of art for Kansas City Public Schools. In 1914, he resigned to travel abroad to paint. Sass traveled in France, Germany and Mexico. On a 1924 trip to Guadalajara, Mexico, Sass was caught in the civil war in the country and was briefly reported missing until he was able to contact relatives and friends.
Upon his retirement, Sass moved to property he owned in Bethel, Kansas, where he painted and lived with his nephew, Joseph A. Sass.
