John Wisely was born in Oklahoma. He is listed as having taken courses in sculpture at the Kansas City Art Institute in the 1930s. He participated in the Midwestern Artists’ Exhibition in 1935 and 1939-1941 and was awarded Honorable Mention in stone carving at the Midwestern Artists’ Exhibition in 1939. Sculptures submitted to the exhibition included work in ceramics as well as stone carving. John Wisely is listed as having served on the faculty at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1939-1940 in ceramics. He was married to Harriet Wisely, who also served on the faculty at the Kansas City Art Institute in ceramics.
John Wisely was known to have exhibited throughout Missouri as well as in Oklahoma and San Francisco, California.
