Emma Lois Craig Allen was a painter and teacher. She was born on February 9, 1861, in Vernon, Indiana. She moved to St. Louis to attend the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University in 1883, and was married to John H. Allen in Colorado in 1884.
Allen was a lifelong educator, and served as assistant director of Campbell’s School of Fine Arts in St. Louis. Allen and her husband relocated to Orange, New Jersey in 1911, where she established a private studio and taught some forty students.
A highlight of Allen’s career was when she exhibited reproductions of historically famous paintings commissioned by the Navy at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. Allen died in New Jersey on March 17, 1946.
