In November of 1863, Lizzie Dickson applied for a nine-month tax license in St. Louis and was also listed as a photographer for her occupation residing at 80 North Fourth Street -- a photography studio owned by William Dickson.
The 1865 Directory of St. Louis listed Lizzie Dickson and Joseph Dickson as partners at the L. Dickson and Brother “New York Gallery,” located at the same address and advertised in newspapers as being “no. 80 opposite Everett House” (Daily Missouri Republican, September 4, 1864). Another 1865 newspaper advertisement boasts “...it is acknowledged by all good judges that the New York Gallery takes the best Photographs in the city” (Daily Missouri Republican, March 19, 1865). Both Lizzie and her brother were also listed as residing at 61 St. Charles Street during this time.
