Algert Peterson was born March 8, 1880, in Yazoo, Mississippi. He began studying photography when he was around twenty-three years old. In January 1909, he moved to Higginsville, Missouri, and purchased a photography studio, later opening a branch in Concordia, Missouri. While there he captured the community life of the region. In 1927, he sold his studios in Concordia and Higginsville to Leonard D. Rehkop.
By 1930, Algert had moved to Columbia, Missouri, where he opened a studio that was in operation until 1965. Peterson photographed individuals, children, families and public events. In 1934, he was named president of the Photographers and Photo Finishers of Central Missouri.
Algert Peterson died on June 25, 1959, in Columbia.
