Adele Schulenberg was born on January 18, 1883, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Wilhelm Schulenberg and Adele Mallinckrodt. Schulenberg began her training in sculpture at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts under George Zolnay, and later studied with Arthur Lewin-Funcke in Berlin and with Charles Grafly at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She was married to fellow artist and etcher Charles K. Gleeson in 1914.
Schulenberg’s works consisted primarily of reliefs and busts, and she also created a number of fountain designs. She first exhibited in St. Louis as early as 1910, and first advertised herself as a sculptor in the 1912 city directory. Her sculptures were included in several major exhibitions, including the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exhibition in Seattle, where she received a bronze medal; the Annual Exhibition of American Paintings and Sculpture at The Art Institute of Chicago, 1916; The Midwestern Artists Exhibition at the Kansas City Art Institute, 1926; and numerous exhibitions at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
Aside from sculpture, Schulenberg also traveled and produced sketches of Mexican life based on her travels.
She was a member of the St. Louis Artists' Guild and the St. Louis Society of Artists, and served as treasurer of the Woman's Art League of St. Louis. Schulenberg was active in St. Louis until the 1930s, when she relocated to Connecticut. She died in 1971 in Briarfcliff Manor, New York.
